A new Helsinki Declaration—but what about public health research?

It is time again. A revised version of the Helsinki Declaration was adopted by the World Medical Assembly in October 2008.1 The previous revision, from the year 2000, did indicate a certain awareness of public health, such as the responsibility of researchers and sponsors to provide benefits to populations.2 My own observation at that time was that many ethical issues relevant to epidemiology and public health were not dealt with in the revised declaration,3 and were better taken
