From Paris to Amsterdam
This issue of the
European Journal of Public Health contains
a short report by Laporte and others (page 484), demonstrating
the high prevalence of epilepsy among homeless people in Paris.
The authors suggest that epilepsy may have contributed to the
social exclusion process, and their paper is a tragic but clear
reminder of the interconnectedness of health conditions and
social circumstances. This interconnectedness is one of the
reasons why health care systems should take a public health
perspective, but this is easier said than done, as illustrated
by the paper of Plochg and others (page 559). Their study of
the health care system in Amsterdam, a city known for its long
and rich history of engagement with public health, shows that
current governance and incentive structures pose serious barriers
to a public health orientation of the health care system.
