The accident at Chernobyl (Ukraine, 1986), the explosions at the fireworks storage (The Netherlands, 2000) and the AZF factory (France, 2001), the terrorist attacks of the Twin Towers (United States, 2001), the summer 2003 heat wave in Europe, the tsunami in Southeast Asia (2004) and, most recently, hurricanes Katrina and Rita (United States, 2005), and the earthquake in Pakistan (2005): all had serious human, health, social, and economic effects that remind us of the vulnerability of human societies to these events. No comprehensive strategy for investigating and learning more about the health, social, and societal consequences of disasters has been defined at the European or international level. These viewpoints focus on post disaster Health Impact Assessment (HIA) which involves exposure and health risk assessment as well as epidemiologic surveillance and in-depth studies.
